My name is Lin Anan, an ordinary housewife. It has been three years since I married my husband, Liu Jun, and we have a two-year-old son. Life was hard, but we managed to get by.
Everything changed when our son, who had just turned two, suddenly fainted last month, and was diagnosed with Nephrotic syndrome.
The doctor told me that I would need a million for his treatment, which was a huge blow for a low-income family like ours.
I nearly fainted from shock when I heard the cost, and was unsure of what to do.
But my son was lying on the hospital bed, so I would do anything to get him treated. As soon as I left the hospital, I rushed over to Liu Jun's workplace to discuss the matter with him.
However, his attitude was very indifferent. He told me he didn't have the money nor could he borrow it from anyone, and just told me to figure something out myself.
I was so angry that I slapped him on the spot. With no time to lose, I started thinking of ways to borrow money. Unfortunately, the amount of loan I could get with my position as a salesperson at a shopping mall would only be able to get me a tiny amount. I fell into despair and cried myself to sleep for days.
Right when I was driven to desperation, my friends at work came up with an idea for me. In the face of my child's life, I chose to sacrifice my dignity and agreed to the idea.
Now, the bruises on my body remind me of how intense the sex was earlier, as I lay motionless and limp on the hotel bed.
That's right. I sold myself to a stranger for the sake of affording my child's medical fees.
The bathroom door opened, and the man walked toward another room in his shorts. I quickly picked my clothes up and put them back on.
The man came back shortly after and sat lazily on the sofa next to him. He handed me a check and said in a playful tone, “The service today was very good. Here's your reward.”
His words made me feel very ashamed, but relieved at the same time. I quickly took the check. However, I was dumbfounded when I saw that it was only two hundred thousand.
My friends had told me that it would be a million! I got anxious from the desperation to save my child. “Mister, did you get the figure wrong? I thought the deal was one million?”
The man had a surprised look on his face, then stood up and grabbed my chin. He was very tall and scary, so I didn't dare struggle. He then said in a mocking tone, “A million? Hehe, I've seen plenty of women like you! You should look in a mirror before asking for that amount. Now take the money and get out!”
I felt hurt by his words, but I knew I might end up getting nothing if I angered him further, so I bolted out of the room as soon as he let go of me.
Once I deposited the check, I rushed to the hospital as quickly as I could and handed all two hundred thousand to the staff at the payment counter. The doctor only started to hook my son up to an IV drip after confirming my payment.
I sat by his hospital bed and looked at his pale face.
Three years ago, my husband Liu Jun had courted me passionately, and I soon fell deeply in love with how caring and considerate he was.
I had thought that our life after marriage would be happy, but his attitude turned cold and distant ever since we had a child. He would hit and scold us often, but I put up with it in order to give our child a complete family.
This time, however, I could not tolerate him any longer. His actions had filled me with both anger and disappointment.
“Mama, Mama!” My child's voice pulled me out of my thoughts. I wiped my tears and forced a smile at him, “Baby, Mama's here.”
“Mama, where's Papa? Why isn't Papa here to see me?” he asked weakly.
I felt a sting in my heart and composed myself before saying, “Papa has to work. He'll come visit you later.”
After comforting him, I had the nurse help look after him while I went home to get some daily essentials.
When I opened the room door upstairs and was changing my shoes in the hallway, I heard Liu Jun talking to my mother-in-law in the kitchen. They hadn't noticed that I was home.
I paused to hear what they were saying when I heard them mention my name and my son.
What I heard shocked me completely.
Their voices were loud as they seemed to be arguing, so I was able to hear them clearly.
My mother-in-law said, “You know that child belongs to another man, yet you helped raise him for so many years! You're so useless! Now look what happened! That unlucky kid got some weird sickness and needs a million for his treatment! That b***h Lin Anan had even thought of selling the house to pay for the bills! I want to see what you'll do about it.”
Her words about my child belonging to another man cut me deeply like a knife. How could my son, Liu Xiaoyang, not belong to Liu Jun?
“That's enough. I won't raise another man's child for free. Someday, I'll get it all back,” Liu Jun said.
At this point, I couldn't hold it in anymore and ran into the kitchen, “Liu Jun, what did you just say? What do you mean by raising another man's child?”
Both of them were shocked by my sudden appearance, and silently exchanged glances with each other.
Liu Jun looked away, “I didn't say anything. My friends invited me to play mahjong with them, so I need to go now.”
He pushed past me and was about to leave after saying that, but I had to get to the bottom of it so I grabbed his shirt. “Explain clearly, what do you mean by that? Why is Xiaoyang another man's child?”
Liu Jun got even more impatient. “Let go, do you hear me?!”
“You're not leaving until you make yourself clear! Whose child would Xiaoyang be if not yours? And what are you going to get back? Just what are you hiding?”
I pressed on, and Liu Jun got increasingly impatient as he couldn't get away. In the end, he reached out and grabbed me by the throat, “Lin Anan, are you done? Let go of me!”
I struggled with all my might and was finally able to breathe, but I kept my grip on him as I wasn't about to just let things go like this.
“You could just tell her that Liu Xiaoyang belongs to the Chief and have them both leave. It annoys me just seeing how we're raising that kid here!” My mother-in-law added as she watched me struggle with Liu Jun.
Liu Jun glared at her, as if she had said something that he had wanted to keep a secret. This made me even more suspicious now, “Who is Chief? Why do you say he's the father?” I stared at him as I asked.
Liu Jun shoved me hard towards the stove, “Get off me! How the hell would I know who Chief is?!”
His force was too strong and sent me crashing towards the boiling pot of soup on the stove, and I cried out in pain as it spilled onto my arms.
Liu Jun didn't care about my injuries and just seized the opportunity to leave the house.
As I was running cold water over my arms, my mother-in-law pushed me. “You've just driven Liu Jun out, and you still have the guts to stay here? Get the hell out, now!”
At that moment, my heart felt as if it was dead within me, and I no longer had the strength to argue with my mother-in-law any further. I packed up my luggage and left that home that I once had a lot of beautiful memories in.
The lights had just begun to illuminate the city as I dragged my suitcase out of the residential area. I turned around to look at the once familiar fifth floor window, and my tears started flowing uncontrollably.
I was still feeling upset after boarding the bus as I thought about what I got in return for all my efforts toward the household.
My son was already asleep by the time I returned to the hospital. I found a chair and slept beside his bed before waking up the next morning and taking the bus to work. I was absent-minded and in a bad mood as I didn't sleep well the night before, and nearly missed my stop.
Just as I arrived at the mall, I felt that all my colleagues were tense, and even the usually arrogant manager looked nervous. My colleagues then told me that the management had just received word that the boss was coming over for inspection.
I had just finished changing into my uniform when I saw the manager fixing his tie as he ran towards the mall entrance. Shortly after, the executives walked into the mall surrounding a young man. The man was slender, fair-skinned, with a sharp nose and a pair of charming eyes under his thin eyebrows.
He had an emotionless look on his face as he listened to the report from the executives while walking, not even nodding at them.
I was starting to wonder why he seemed so familiar. Where have I seen him before?
That was when it hit me. He looked like the man from the hotel that night! He had the same delicate facial features and cold look in his eyes, but I wasn't entirely certain. The lighting was dim in the hotel room and I was very nervous that time.
Then, he suddenly walked in my direction!
My heart started racing as I wondered if he had recognized me, and I kept my head low to avoid looking directly at him.
He stopped briefly next to me and walked away without saying a word. He then pointed at the counter next to me and asked my manager to change it as it looked too cheap for a place that sells expensive phones.
It wasn't until he took the escalator up to the second floor that my heartbeat slowly calmed down. I was probably overthinking things. It might not actually be him. There was no way he'd still remember me even if it was. To him, I was nothing but a prostitute not even worth remembering.
My colleagues next to me were excited. “Wow, isn't that boss too young and handsome? Is he one of those tyrannical bosses that we've heard of?”
“He looked at me just now! He actually looked at me!” Another colleague blushed happily as she held her face in her hands.
“Stop dreaming now, who do you think you are? You really think he'd look your way? I've heard that Mr. Mu's girlfriend is the rich daughter of the mayor and they're getting married in two days,” another colleague said.
As I listened to them praise his good looks, images of that messy night in the hotel flashed by in my head. I forced myself to not think about it as I reluctantly got back to work.
When it was almost noon, the manager came and asked me to go to his office. I was very nervous as I was worried that I might have made a mistake somewhere at work, but he told me that Mr. Mu was the one who wanted to see me.
My heart began to race again when I heard that. He wanted to see me? Why would he want to see me?
The manager led me to his office and announced that he had brought me here as he stood respectfully next to him.
Mr. Mu just waved his hand without even raising his head as he sat in his chair reading some documents.
With that, the manager stepped out of the office. I wanted to leave as well, but the manager motioned for me to stay and closed the door behind him. It was only the two of us left in the office, and I lowered my head further.
I hoped he wouldn't recognize me, but a part of me wanted him to. I wasn't even sure of what I wanted.
Then, I heard footsteps approaching me and he soon stood before me. I continued to keep my head low.
“Raise your head.” His voice was attractive but cold at the same time, and had no emotion in it.
I slowly raised my head to look at him.
“What a coincidence. We meet again.” His tone sounded condescending and flirtatious.
So, he had recognized me after all! I felt my face burning and wished the earth would open up and swallow me whole, but I tried my best to keep calm. “I think you have mistaken me for someone else, Mr. Mu. We haven't met before.”
I wasn't trying to deny what had happened, but what we had was a mere business transaction. I didn't want to have anything to do with him, now that the deal was over. Besides, I also didn't want him to think that I was trying to get together with him or anything.
A man like him was probably used to having all the women cling to him, so he was very dissatisfied with my reply and his tone grew colder, “I want to question the Human Resource department as to why a hotel call girl has made her way into a company owned by Mu Group.”
I couldn't help but raise my head as I retorted, “I'm not a prostitute!”
He smiled contemptuously, “So you're an amateur. No wonder you didn't even know how to moan in bed.”
I felt my face flush again as I looked down at the ground. I walked out of the office as I refused to let him continue insulting me like that.
I heard him mock me from behind. “Trying to hold your head high after being a whore?”
I pretended to not hear it as I fled from his office, but his handsome face kept filling my mind after I returned to my post.
I cursed at myself for being so stupid, thinking about a man that disgusting.
When it was finally time to get off work, I punched out and rushed toward the nearest bus stop. The platform was very crowded as it was rush hour. They rushed forward before the bus had come to a complete halt. I was unable to get on even after multiple attempts.
I grew increasingly anxious as I thought of Xiaoyang who was waiting for me in the hospital.
A Porsche pulled up next to me, and I saw his face again when he rolled down the window.
He didn't say a word and just motioned at me to get in the car. I hesitated for a bit, but got into his car anyway.
“Where are you going?” he asked.
“Huadong Hospital.”
“I'm going the same way.” He said.
And we spent the rest of the ride in silence, as he didn't speak and I didn't know what to say either. The atmosphere in the car was really awkward.
After we arrived at Huadong Hospital, I bowed and thanked him for the ride, but he just ignored me and sped off.
What a strange man. Didn't he say he was going in the same way? Why did he go the other way?
When I got to the ward, I saw another person in Xiaoyang's bed.
I was shocked and shouted his name as I frantically searched around the hospital for him, but couldn't find him.
In the end, I asked the receptionist at the front desk and they told me that he had been discharged earlier in the afternoon by his guardian who had also refunded the remaining amount of his medical bill.
I told them that that was impossible because I was his guardian, but they said that it was the child's father. Furthermore, he was able to prove his identity and they had no choice but to do as told.
I thought about it and realized that it must have been the work of that scumbag, Liu Jun. I called his phone but he wouldn't answer. I had no choice but to go back to that house.
Both Liu Jun and my mother-in-law were at home. However, I couldn't find my son even after searching through all the rooms.
I asked Liu Jun where my son was, and he slapped me across the face, “You [bɪtʃ]! You cheated on me and you dare come to me asking for your child? As if Xiaoyang would accept a whore like you as his mother?!”
I slapped him angrily in return, “You're the shameless one! You got him discharged and even refunded his medical bills! Give me back my child!”
Liu Jun grabbed me by the hair and dragged me in front of the computer screen and pointed at it, “You're still denying it? The video is already being spread on the internet! Lin Anan, you'd better pay me a million for the emotional distress you've caused me or you'll never see your son ever again!”
My brain went blank as I saw that it really was me in the photographs. They were taken at the hotel, and the angle was good enough to capture me entering the room with him.
How could this happen? Was it the hotel staff that took the photos and uploaded them?
